I imagine life without many things, but life without boys just wouldn't be the same.

If there were no boys, who would rescue us from evil villains that invade our homes?

Who would teach us to sing in the rain?

Who would limit our dirty dishes by drinking straight from the carton?

Who would remind us to watch where we step?

Who would keep the ladies entertained?

Who would turn a reenactment of Mary and Joseph riding to Bethlehem into a bull-ride?

Who would keep us up late at night surfing the internet on how to best apply super glue to wrestling wound?

Who would eat the cream out of all the cookies?

Who would remind us that life is more fun in your underwear?

Who would keep a brother company on the other side of the world?

But most importantly... who would teach our little boys how to become big boys? Who would teach them how to become husbands and daddies and men of God?

There's no denying it. Boys are a necessity in life that we just can't afford to do without!

five on friday

1. One of the things I have missed the most since moving to India is Pandora. Apparently, you can only access it in the US. I've run into the same problem with other sites. But I am back in business! Thanks to a website and new app on my iPhone, I am now an active Pandora listener! If you live outside of the US and are struggling from the same problem, check out Hotspot Shield or check out the app on your iPhone. The best part is it's just in time for Christmas music!

2. Speaking of Christmas, guess who didn't bring ONE Christmas decoration to India? That would be me. I'm not quite sure what I was thinking. Perhaps I didn't realize the holiday would still arrive in December as it does each year. The problem now is to figure out how to remedy this situation. It will most likely be a "Charlie Brown" Christmas at the Marlin house. The decorations may be simple, but I'm expecting this Christmas to be no less special than any we've had in the past!

3. I'm really brushing up on nursing skills in India. This week I gave my second shot to the "kidney stone" patient, and I super-glued a head gash back together. Both patients are recovering and there should be minimal lasting damage.

4. Did I tell you we bought a scooter? It is so much fun and the boys love riding around on it. We experienced some random events the night we bought it. The craziest part of the evening was our photo shoot. When I say they took our photo, I mean a professional photographer arrived, posed our unexpecting, terribly dressed family, took SEVERAL pictures and left. This week we found out why. Our family photo was featured in the newspaper to lure other buyers in. How odd! I'd be curious to know if that picture actually brought in any sells! I'd bet not! I'm thinking if they had spelled our name right, it might have been more successful!

5. In the last few years, sewing has been something I REALLY enjoy doing. When we moved, I was afraid to bring my machine with me for many reasons... travel damage, electrical surges, not to mention the electrical voltage is different from that of the States. But I couldn't do without a machine. Last week, I became the owner of my third sewing machine. I've already sewn a pair of curtains, and I have lots of other projects spinning around in my head. She's not as nice as the one that's sitting in a closet in Georgia, but I have a feeling she and I will be spending lots of time together!

five on friday

1. Though this will certainly not be my most interesting five on friday, it's my "baby step" to getting back to blogging! I'm not sure why I fell into such a slump of not posting, but the vacation MUST end!

2. We are finally semi-settled in our house. It's crazy how bare a house can feel when you start from scratch. I really do have plans of posting pictures, but my blog-cation got in the way. I'll put that on my to-do list! For those who have asked, our new address is:

The Marlins
D-14 Fortune Prestige
E-8 Extension
Trilanga
Bhopal, INDIA 462039
(786) 991- 9863

I also added a new section on the sidebar for those who have asked what we miss most. Thought I'd just change it out as we long for new things!

3. Our puppy, Lucy, is also settling into life with the Marlins. And I've been reminded what it's like to have a 'baby.' She does sleep through the night, but she's ready for the day at 6:30 every morning!

4. You'll be glad to know I didn't massacre anyone with a truck this week. That's mainly due to the fact that I haven't driven anywhere, but I still consider it a success!

5. In an effort to de-stress from my accident, Beth and I went to a spa on Tuesday. The massages were super cheap, and they weren't at all inappropriate like my last massage! We also got haircuts. Have you ever seen the aftermath of a child who cut their bangs with scissors? My bangs may or may not look like that, but all in all, it was a successful trip! I'm thinking of going back every week for a different treatment... only not a haircut. I've informed Beth that she will be giving me my next haircut. I'm counting on YouTube to sharpen her cosmetology skills!

driving- day 1

Driving has always tossed up its own share of "bumps" in my road. When I was 16, just nine days after I received my license, I backed into a beautiful Lincoln Town Car. I later took out a Cadillac and an old tree while in reverse. I've had more than my fair share of speeding tickets... even a few that cost my parents more than I care to think about!

But with all that said, I'm really not a "bad driver." True, I've had a couple of mishaps, but most were early on in my driving career and I thought I had outgrown them.... at least I thought that until yesterday!

We were so fortunate to be loaned a car for a few months here in India. I was itching to drive, but I had to overcome a few problems. First, the car is a stick shift. I've had a little history in this department, but I definitely needed a refresher course. Second, the steering wheel is on the right side of the car, and you drive on the left side of the road. Just to be on the safe side, I took a test drive yesterday with the family. I was especially impressed with my ability to drive. I was fairly smooth at changing gears and the car only stalled once. With all my confidence, I was ready for the trip to the mall.

We loaded up. Things were going great... until I came to an intersection. I forgot to mention that driving in India is quite a different experience from the US. Though there are lanes on the roads, no one adheres to them. I've never really noticed a speed limit, and cars, motorcycles, scooters, buses, and dumptrucks are often found on the wrong side of the road if they feel like driving over there! The intersection I turned in to was no different. Vehicles and 2-wheelers were everywhere. And. Then. I. Stalled. Out. The car shut off because I was in too high of a gear. I managed to get the car started back up. Just as I was giving it gas, a speedy blue motorcycle attempted to get around the traffic jam that I had caused, and unfortunately for him, my tank "bumped" him. By "bumped," I don't mean a slight shove. I mean this poor man broke his leg and his wrist. Mass panic quickly arose.

A sea of people began to stop on bikes and get out to assist the man. Jason got out, but there was little he could understand because our Hindi is so limited. Eventually, we found ourselves at the police station trying to figure out the plan of action in such an event. Thankfully, we have a wonderful landlord that came to the station to assist us. Though I had already begun to envision myself living out a lifetime sentence in an Indian prison, the repercussions were not as tragic. We helped pay medical bills for the unlucky man that was hit and a fine to the police.

I've replayed the event in my head a million times. Other than the fact that I stalled out in the intersection, the motorcyclist and I were both just in the wrong place at the wrong time. In the midst of the event, I couldn't help but recall the owner of the Cadillac I backed in to when I was 16. Her father and two daughters had been hit getting out of their vehicle by a drunk driver on Christmas Eve. All three were killed. Her response to me hitting her car was, "It's only a car!" Though the man did suffer some injuries, I'm so thankful it wasn't serious!

Don't worry though... I'm not down for the count! I intend to drive again. Mistakes are how we learn, right?
